One of Canada’s first microbreweries is now one of the greenest

Vancouver—Bullfrog Power®, Canada’s leading green energy provider, and Granville Island Brewing (Granville) are announcing a new partnership that makes Granville the first brewery in British Columbia to choose 100 per cent green electricity and 100 per cent green natural gas for its operations. As a result, Granville Island Brewing will be avoiding 100 per cent of the emissions associated with the energy used by its brewery facilities.

“Committing to renewable energy with Bullfrog Power is the latest step in Granville Island Brewing’s sustainability journey,” said Dave Nicholls, General Manager, Granville Island Brewing. “As one of Canada’s oldest microbreweries, we’re especially proud to be the first B.C. brewery to choose 100 per cent renewable energy with Bullfrog Power.”

Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power’s generators put 100 per cent clean, pollution-free electricity onto the grid to match the amount of conventional power that Granville Island Brewing’s facilities use. Across Canada, Bullfrog Power’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities.

Bullfrog Power’s producers also inject green natural gas onto the national pipeline to match the amount of conventional natural gas used by Granville Island Brewing’s operations. Sourced from a unique, ground-breaking methane-capture project situated on one of Canada’s landfills, Bullfrog’s green natural gas is a climate-friendly alternative to conventional, polluting natural gas. Through this innovative technology, biogas is captured, cleaned up, and injected onto the national natural gas pipeline, displacing fossil fuel-based gas and reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

“Sustainability is becoming a watchword in the brewing industry, which is why we’re excited that Granville Island Brewing is making such a significant commitment to renewable energy,” said Josephine Coombe, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Bullfrog Power. “By choosing green energy, Granville Island Brewing is doing more than reducing its own environmental impact—with Bullfrog Power, Granville is also helping to support Bullfrog’s community renewable energy projects from coast to coast.”

Recent Bullfrog Power community projects in British Columbia include a solar project with the Kitasoo/Xai’Xais First Nation and a rooftop solar installation at Gulf Islands Secondary School on Salt Spring Island.

In addition to supporting green energy with Bullfrog Power, Granville Island Brewing’s sustainability initiatives include:

  • Participation in glass bottle pool where glass is recycled up to 10 times before being broken down.
  • Spent grains used in the brewing process are used for animal feed at local farms.
  • On site recycling program at brewing, office and distribution facilities.

About Granville Island Brewing (Granville)
Started in Vancouver in 1984, Granville Island Brewing (Granville) is one of a handful of breweries at the forefront of the better beer movement known today as craft. Our founders believed consumers deserve more real choice than the available mainstream lagers that essentially look and taste the same.  Quality and authentic styles have always been at the core of the Granville philosophy.  Throughout the last three decades Granville has introduced a

portfolio of flavourful styles to consumers and has maintained the quality that originally put us on the map in the West. While the craft beer movement continues to explode around us, our philosophy has not changed. As a leader in craft, we seek to bring in mainstream drinkers and further this craft movement with our flavourful variety of high-quality beers. Our original small batch brewery is still on Granville Island. It is our exploration space that welcomes thousands of tourists and locals to learn about craft beer and enjoy a quality pint.
