Halifax—For this year’s Earth Hour (Saturday, March 25), Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy provider, and Mic Mac Mall are teaming up to provide enough renewable energy to bullfrogpower every home in Halifax for one hour. Through the agreement, Mic Mac Mall will purchase 155,000 kWh of green electricity from Bullfrog Power—equivalent to what 165,155 homes in Halifax would use in one hour.[1]

“At Mic Mac Mall, we believe that sustainable action needs to involve our community. By bullfrogpowering the equivalent of every home in Halifax, we’re not just supporting green energy, we’re sending a signal that we all need to come together to do our part for the environment,” said Tamitha Oakley, General Manager, Mic Mac Mall.

Mic Mac Mall also bullfrogpowers 50 per cent of the mall’s common areas with green electricity. That means that Bullfrog Power’s generators put clean, pollution-free electricity onto the grid to match the amount of conventional power used by 50 per cent of Mic Mac Mall’s common areas. Across Canada, Bullfrog Power’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities.

“Mic Mac Mall’s Earth Hour initiative is a great example of how businesses can take meaningful action on climate change by engaging their communities, raising awareness about the issue, and encouraging us all to do more to reduce our environmental impact,” said Holly Bond, VP Regional Sales, Bullfrog Power.

Earth Hour is WWF’s global environmental movement. Born in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in more than 170 countries and territories to take tangible climate action for over a decade. The movement recognizes the role of individuals in acting on climate change and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action.

“Earth Hour is meant to spark meaningful changes to tackle climate change, including in our own homes,” says David Miller, President and CEO, WWF-Canada. “It’s an opportunity to focus on solutions and making the transition to renewable energy is something we must and can do.”

In addition to Earth Hour activities and choosing Bullfrog Power’s green energy, Mic Mac Mall has a focus on waste reduction. The Sort it Out program is an initiative that ensures food court waste is properly separated and disposed of. Customers are encouraged to bring their trays to the Food Court sorting station, where service staff collect and separate the waste according to City of Halifax Waste Management guidelines. This program significantly increased the amount of organics and recycles diverted from landfill sites. Today, the Mic Mac Mall Food Court has a 90.2 per cent waste diversion rate.
