Brian Phillips is the owner of worldSALON, an award-winning, bullfrogpowered hair salon in Toronto. Phillips—who has styled celebrities such as k.d. lang, James Marsden and Nora Jones—also produces WORLD, a line of fragrance-free personal care products.

Phillips launched WORLD to provide a healthier alternative for customers who are sensitive to chemicals commonly used in fragranced products—such as phthalates and parabens. The personal connection: Phillips himself suffered contact dermatitis on his hands from salon styling products before switching to fragrance-free alternatives.

In addition to being gentler on the skin, WORLD’s fragrance-free products are also biodegradable, making them a healthier option for the planet.

Below, Phillips offers some tips for keeping your skin healthy:

  • It helps to remind oneself that the skin is an organ. Your skin looks and functions optimally when you minimize stress, properly hydrate yourself and use healthy, organic ingredients—both inside and outside your body.
  • Exercise often to get your heart rate up and increase blood flow to nourish skin cells.
  • Whatever products you are using on your hair are going to impact the skin on your face and shoulders. If you are taking the time to eat organic food and exercise, don’t pollute your body with cheap drugstore hair products. Find a healthy line (like WORLD Hair and Skin!) that will complement your lifestyle.

Established in 1989 in the historic St. Lawrence Market Area of downtown Toronto, worldSALON focuses on sustainability and health and those who are interested in “beautiful hair, without a toxic hangover.” worldSALON is also one of the original members of Green Circle Salons, a group of salons dedicated to minimizing their environmental impact.
