Oshawa, ON—Earth Hour is Saturday, March 24, at 8:30 pm. To celebrate, Oshawa Centre and Bullfrog Power are partnering to provide enough renewable electricity to bullfrogpower every home in Oshawa for one hour. Through the agreement, Oshawa Centre will purchase 119 MWh of green electricity from Bullfrog Power—equivalent to what 113,285 households in Oshawa use in an hour. In addition, Oshawa Centre will dim its lighting and reduce the running of its HVAC units during Earth Hour.
“The theme of Earth Hour 2018 is #Connect2Earth because we need more people to speak up to preserve our community’s natural environment,” said Chris Keillor, General Manager, Oshawa Centre. “That’s why Oshawa Centre connected with Bullfrog Power on a new initiative for us to extend our environmental commitment to our community, ensuring green electricity goes into the grid to match what all of Oshawa’s households would use in an hour.”
Every year throughout the year, Oshawa Centre also bullfrogpowers 100 per cent of its common areas, the Oshawa Centre Galleria and Oshawa Executive Centre with green electricity. That means that Bullfrog Power’s generators put clean, pollution-free electricity onto the grid to match the amount of conventional power its bullfrogpowered facilities use. Across Canada, Bullfrog Power’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities.
“Businesses can act as a force for good by connecting people to an important cause—this year Oshawa Centre is doing just that for Earth Hour,” said Anthony Santilli, VP Sales and Marketing, Bullfrog Power. “Through its green energy commitment with Bullfrog, Oshawa Centre is supporting renewable energy and the development of new community-based renewable energy projects across Canada.”
Earth Hour is WWF’s global environmental movement. Born in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in more than 170 countries and territories to take tangible climate action for over a decade. The movement recognizes the role of individuals in changing climate change and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action.
“Wildlife loss is real, it’s widespread in Canada and around the world, it’s happening now and it affects all of us. Declining wildlife populations rely on the same things people need to thrive: Safe places to go about their lives, plenty of food and abundant healthy water. When you turn out your lights this Earth Hour, home by home, street by street, community by community, you’re showing that together we need to take the necessary steps to reverse the decline of wildlife,” says Megan Leslie, President and CEO, WWF-Canada.
In addition to choosing green electricity, Oshawa Centre’s commitment to sustainability includes:
- A $230 million expansion and renovation project that will include a suite of environmental and sustainability programming.
- A partnership with Habitat for Humanity Canada, that has diverted 12,600-square-feet of drywall, 7,892’ linear of track, and 907’ linear of baseboard from landfill and donated it to the Habitat for Humanity Canada Durham ReStores.
- Bike racks on the east and west side of the shopping centre and access to public transit routes to support sustainable transportation.
