Technology is rapidly transforming how goods move through our world. It’s never been easier to order your last-minute items for tomorrow’s flight. Behind that convenience is a vast network moving everything from letters to temperature-sensitive healthcare supplies between businesses, distribution centres, and homes. As this network expands, so does the opportunity to reinvent courier systems to be more sustainable, reliable, and resilient in the face of climate change.

Purolator has been advancing toward this vision through their interim and long-term science-based goals, focusing action where it matters most. Purolator measures and reports its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with consistency, transparency, and credibility. They’ve invested in several strategic initiatives such as deploying all-electric last-mile delivery vehicles and reducing facility GHG emissions, which includes sourcing renewable electricity with Bullfrog Power.

Our partnership began in 2021, starting with a focused regional approach to address their largest GHG emissions-reduction opportunities. Since then, Purolator’s renewable electricity purchases have expanded and will continue to grow until their goals are met. We spoke with Cindy Bailey, VP & Corporate Sustainability Officer at Purolator, to learn more about how the partnership has developed over the years.

Purolator has long recognized that delivering for customers and communities also means delivering for the planet. They have committed to a broad sustainability strategy with ambitious goals to reduce GHG emissions and be Canada’s greenest courier.

“As part of our climate commitments, we set out to better understand and reduce GHG emissions across our organization. As we progressed in measuring and understanding our Scope 2 GHG emissions, it became clear that renewable electricity would play a key part in our long-term decarbonization strategy,” said Cindy Bailey, VP & Corporate Sustainability Officer. “With national operations and ambitious climate goals, we needed a partner that could support our scale while maintaining a strong connection to Canadian renewable energy projects. Bullfrog Power stood out as a partner because of their credibility, transparency, and long-standing leadership in Canada’s renewable energy market.”

The initial purchase covered operational electricity in Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan, which were selected for their combination of operational presence and GHG emissions-reduction potential. “In both provinces, Purolator operates facilities where electricity-related emissions are higher than elsewhere due to coal- and natural gas–based grids, resulting in higher carbon intensity,” said Cindy. Starting in these regions allowed for meaningful GHG emissions reductions and experience with implementation at a manageable scale.

As annual renewable electricity purchases became embedded in planning, budgeting, and reporting, they moved from pilot projects to business-as-usual decision-making. Today, Purolator views renewable electricity as one of several integrated levers alongside fleet electrification, renewable fuels, energy efficiency, and operational optimization.

Addressing GHG emissions coast-to-coast

Since the partnership began, Purolator has increased its renewable electricity purchases through Bullfrog Power each year. “We have since expanded our renewable electricity purchases to cover our operations in Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick, and will continue to increase our annual purchases until we achieve 100% renewable electricity use.”

Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, Bullfrog works closely with Purolator to understand their operational needs and decarbonization goals. “Bullfrog’s partnership mindset, combined with their deep expertise in renewable electricity—particularly in the Canadian market—gave us confidence that this would be a long-term relationship capable of evolving alongside our broader sustainability strategy.”

Managing change and tracking impact

For Purolator, integrating renewable electricity into its climate strategy required a pragmatic and phased approach to balancing cost, operational complexity, and environmental impact. With millions of packages moving across Canada every year, a solution was needed to reduce GHG emissions without disrupting day-to-day operations. “Working with Bullfrog Power helped simplify what could otherwise be a complex process for purchasing renewable electricity, from sourcing to certification.”

Alongside other decarbonization options and sustainability action, cost was carefully considered with impact and financial responsibility. “This balanced approach ensured that renewable electricity complemented our other sustainability investments such as deploying all-electric last-mile delivery vehicles and shifting to renewable diesel fuel.”

Experienced partners make the difference

Purolator’s journey decarbonizing its operations offers valuable lessons for other organizations. They highlight the importance of first developing a clear understanding of electricity use across operations, working with experienced partners, and viewing renewable electricity as part of a broader GHG emissions-reduction strategy.

“Bullfrog’s ability to source high-quality and certified renewable electricity from projects across the country aligned well with our GHG emissions reduction strategy and goals.”

Their commitment to environmental sustainability also fosters stronger engagement with both internal and external stakeholders. “For employees, it provides a clear example of how environmental commitments translate into concrete operational actions. This visibility reinforces the role sustainability plays in our business and personal decisions.”

Purolator’s approach shows how renewable electricity can be integrated into a broader decarbonization strategy in a practical and scalable way. Organizations looking to take the next step can connect with Bullfrog Power’s team to explore how renewable electricity could support their decarbonization goals.
