More than twenty years ago, we set out to build a cleaner, healthier Canada, becoming the first to offer households a green electricity choice. Since then, we've helped thousands of individuals and organizations reduce their emissions through renewable energy.
Real environmental progress means not just cutting emissions but rebuilding the systems that keep our climate in balance. That's why we created Bullfrog Nature: a way for individuals and organizations to power verified tree and kelp plantings across Canada, restoring ecosystems and helping clean the air and water we all depend on today.
Nature is Canada's infrastructure
According to Natural Resources Canada, Canada's forests and coastlines work like public infrastructure. They clean our air, filter our water, protect communities from floods and erosion, and support local economies from coast to coast.
Canada holds 28% of the world's boreal zone, or 552 million hectares, which means the health of our forests affects the environment far beyond our borders. These forests store carbon, purify air and water, and help regulate the climate. They also support local jobs and livelihoods, and 70% of Indigenous communities in Canada are in forested regions.
When these systems decline, the costs don't stay in the wilderness. They show up in our communities, our health, and our household budgets.
The impact is already close to home
For many Canadians, climate change is no longer a future concern. In 2023, more than 6,000 wildfires burned 15 million hectares, an area larger than England, and more than double the previous record set in 1989. Over 230,000 people were evacuated that year, according to Natural Resources Canada.
The smoke travels far beyond the fire line. A peer-reviewed study by Health Canada researchers found that long-term wildfire smoke exposure from 2013 to 2023 was linked to about 1,900 premature deaths per year, with an economic toll of $18 billion annually. Over that period, more than 80% of Canadians were regularly exposed to wildfire smoke.
Our drinking water is on the line too. Two-thirds of Canadians get their drinking water from lakes, rivers, and reservoirs, and much of that water starts in forested areas where soil filters out pollutants like mercury and pesticides. When fire or other disturbances strip away trees and damage the forest floor, the soil stores less water, which can lead to major flooding and affect the quality of water reaching downstream communities.
In 2022, the federal government pledged to restore 19 million hectares of degraded and deforested land by 2030, an area more than three times the size of Nova Scotia. Every tree planted helps stabilize soil, protect watersheds, and rebuild wildlife habitat, starting from the moment it takes root.
Beneath the surface: BC's kelp forests
Our coastal ecosystems are under similar strain. Researchers with the Kelp Rescue Initiative estimate that some regions around British Columbia have lost 90 to 95% of their kelp. Kelp forests provide habitat for marine species, protect shorelines, and support the cultural and economic wellbeing of coastal communities. Kelp is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth, so replanting delivers benefits quickly: calmer shorelines, healthier fish populations, and cleaner coastal water.
How Bullfrog Nature works
When you purchase through Bullfrog Nature, you plant native trees in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia, or kelp plantings along BC's Pacific coast. Our reforestation and seaforestation projects are tracked and verified for long-term accountability. Each unit of tree or kelp is digitized and paired with a personal Impact Explorer where you can track your environmental impact, giving you a clear record of your planting and its impact.
Driving change where it matters most
Our projects drive positive environmental and social impact that benefit communities across Canada through:
- Boosting species biodiversity, conservation, and growth amongst native species, building overall ecosystem resilience.
- Rehabilitating forests to improve soil health, protect against land degradation, and foster a sustainable cycle of growth and regeneration.
- Planting of native tree and kelp species, guided by Indigenous knowledge and stewardship practices.
Guided by Indigenous knowledge
In collaboration with local Indigenous communities, our Kelp Seaforestation Project and the Post-Wildfire Project in British Columbia directly integrate Indigenous knowledge and practices to ensure sustainable and culturally-rooted planting initiatives. This includes safeguarding cultural traditions and engaging local communities to help plant and protect kelp sites.
Make your first planting
Whether you're an individual looking to help restore our ecosystems or an organization building on its climate commitments, Bullfrog Nature makes restoration simple and transparent. Every tree and kelp planting helps protect the air, water, and communities Canadians depend on today.
